Monaco participates in 75th World Health Assembly

The 75th World Health Assembly was held in Geneva from 22 to 28 May 2022. The theme for this year’s general debate was “Health for peace, peace for health”. In a recorded speech, Isabelle BERRO-AMADEÏ, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, recalled that the health of all peoples was a basic condition for world peace and security. She reiterated that the Principality stood in solidarity with the Ukrainian people and called for the protection of civilians and health workers, as well as the safeguarding of civil and health infrastructure.

Due to its tragic consequences, the situation in Ukraine and neighbouring countries was the focus of the discussions. The Principality supported a resolution submitted by Ukraine alongside more than 50 member states.

Monaco also contributed to discussions on strengthening WHO’s preparedness for and response to health emergencies, and supported a resolution to this effect on amendments to the International Health Regulations.

There was an update on the COVID-19 situation and on the emergence of monkeypox cases. With regard to COVID-19, it was made clear that the pandemic is ongoing. WHO recommended that member states should continue their testing, monitoring and vaccination campaigns. On monkeypox, member states asked to be kept regularly updated of developments in the number of cases and the research underway.

Finally, Dr Tedros ADHANOM GHEBREYESUS was re-elected as head of WHO for a second term.
