Eris variant: the Monaco Government appeals for vigilance
With the start of the new school year fast approaching, the Minister of Health and Social Affairs would like to remind everyone that "the COVID-19 virus is still circulating. However, given the minor symptoms caused by the latest strain of the virus and the lack of impact on the Princess Grace Hospital, the situation does not require any restrictive measures to be taken at this time. Nevertheless, it is important to be as vigilant as possible and to continue with common-sense measures such as wearing a mask if you are symptomatic and ensuring that booster vaccinations are up to date, particularly for people at risk of severe disease and the over-60s".
An upsurge in cases of COVID-19 has been recorded in the Principality and neighbouring regions due to the emergence of a new EG.5 variant known as "Eris", which is a sub-lineage of the Omicron variant.
Christophe Robino also pointed out that "while there are no self isolation requirements for those who test positive, it is recommended that anyone with persistent symptoms consult their GP, who is at liberty to prescribe time off work if deemed necessary".
Although existing vaccines are effective against the virus, a new vaccine, adapted to the circulating strain, is in the process of being approved by the international health authorities, which will hopefully be available before the winter period.
As a reminder, vaccination appointments in the Principality can be obtained very quickly by contacting the Monegasque screening centre on: (+377) 97.98.83.02.
