Plati Centre, a medical psychology service

Plati Centre, a medical psychology service for children and teens

Role

Operating under the authority of the Department of Health Affairs (DASA), the Plati Centre, a medical psychology service for children and teens, is aimed at children who attend school in the Principality of Monaco and are suffering from psychological problems and/or complex learning difficulties, as well as their families.

The Plati Centre is made up of three units:

  • The Medical Psychology Centre (CMP)
  • The Day Therapy Activities Centre (CATTP)
  • The Learning Difficulties Assessment Centre (CDTA)

A variety of professionals work as part of the teams at these centres:

  • The child psychiatrist is a doctor specialising in children’s psychological functioning and development whose role is to determine the treatment to be provided, offer guidance and coordinate care.
  • The psychologists and psychotherapist work with the child psychiatrist to implement preventive and/or curative care through discussions and, selectively, assessment tools.
  • The psychologist specialising in neuropsychology assesses cognitive functions (learning, attention, memory) using standardised tests and implements specific treatments.
  • The psychomotor therapist, a specialist in psychomotor disorders, helps children to better understand their bodies, other people and their environment using physical activities (focused on expression, relaxation, sensory stimulation, etc.).
  • The speech therapist, a specialist in language impairments that can manifest orally (voice, articulation, speech) or in writing, carries out an assessment and offers therapy through one or more sessions a week.
  • The social worker’s role is to provide the family with information about the procedures which need to be completed in order to access all kinds of support and services, working with all partners who are supporting the child.
  • The special needs teacher supports children and teenagers with a disability and/or behavioural difficulties and helps them to develop their independence and social skills.
  • The art therapist works with children and teenagers who have difficulties expressing themselves by drawing out their creative abilities.
  • The medical secretary responds to requests via telephone or on site, gathers some initial information, welcomes families and provides information about how the service operates. Like other members of the team, the secretary is bound by medical confidentiality.

Organisation

Medical Psychology Centre (CMP)

The CMP welcomes children and their families, and offers personalised treatment to children through consultations as well as support for the family.

It has spacious premises, including consultation offices, activity rooms and a meeting room.

The CMP team includes:

  • A child psychiatrist
  • A psychologist and psychotherapist
  • A psychomotor therapist
  • A speech therapist
  • A social worker
  • A medical secretary

Day Therapy Activities Centre (CATTP) and Learning Difficulties Assessment Centre (CDTA)

The CATTP monitors children and teenagers in a group setting supervised by two therapists and offers support to families.

The CDTA sees children and teenagers with identified learning difficulties who have been referred by the medical inspector from the Medical Inspectorate for Schools. The CDTA carries out assessments coordinated by the child psychiatrist in conjunction with the medical inspector from the Medical Inspectorate for Schools and the educational monitoring team. It suggests accommodations that can be made in school and, if necessary, individual or group monitoring.

Based at 7 Rue Plati, the CATTP and CDTA have offices, activity rooms, a psychomotor therapy room and a sensory stimulation room (using the Snoezelen approach).

These facilities provide a range of stimulation that can help concentration, sensory development, relationship development and communications development.

The CATTP and CDTA team includes:

  • A child psychiatrist
  • A clinical psychologist
  • A psychologist specialising in neuropsychology
  • A psychomotor therapist
  • A speech therapist
  • A social worker
  • A special needs teacher
  • An art therapist
  • A medical secretary

The treatments offered to children by these two facilities are complementary. The child psychiatrists act in concert to provide guidance depending on the needs of the child.
