Addictions: let’s talk about it

What is an addiction?

Addictions can be a part of life, but they become a problem when they have harmful consequences on a person’s physical or mental health. Addictions are also harmful when they impact on family and social life, work and school. They can cause financial and/or legal problems. The first signs of addiction appear when a person becomes trapped by an inability to abstain from a product or behaviour.

Is there more than one type of addiction?

Addiction can take multiple forms. It can involve legal or illegal products such as alcohol, tobacco, prescription drugs, cannabis and other drugs like heroin and cocaine. It can also involve a behaviour, such as screens, internet or gambling.

The Centre de Soins, d’Accompagnement et de Prévention en Addictologie de Monaco (CSAPAM)

As part of its efforts to prevent and reduce risks associated with addiction, the Prince’s Government, under the impetus of the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs, has opened an outpatient care centre specialised in addictology that offers prevention services to people suffering from addiction disorder, their families, and professionals who work with these people. The CSAPAM is open to anyone residing, working or attending school in the Principality of Monaco. Consultations are free of charge and completely confidential. The centre offers assessments and guidance based on the situation, along with outpatient care and follow-up for Monegasque residents. Consultations must be booked in advance and are offered as promptly as possible.

Anyone dealing with an addiction can contact the centre. This can be the user themselves but also their family and friends or a healthcare professional. People are welcomed by a dedicated team and accompanied by a medical specialist.
